ENGULF
Subsumed Atrocities
(Everlasting Spew Records)

ENGULF, from the United States, are the brainchild of Hal Microutsicos and it speaks volumes about the time and age we are living in when one guy alone can do something with this quality. Remember bedroom Black Metal bands that sounded like crap but it was ok because it was "True" and "cult"? Well this is another dimension entirely. Amazing elaborate Death Metal with state-of-the-art production and a high level of musicianship. We have also reached a stage in which you can no longer easily spot programmed drums at all. This sounds organic and extreme, and as effective and well composed as the other instruments. Concerning the sound, I was immediately reminded of HATE ETERNAL and bands of the like… I guess this is an apt comparison for you to have an idea. I much enjoy all the work in keeping the tracks interesting, with constant riff changes and out of the ordinary structures. And on top of it, it has a cool old school looking cover artwork hinting at the overwhelming powers of the cosmos. There are only two tracks in this remarkable EP, running short of 9 minutes in total, but they are an accomplishment. I’d take my hat off to Hal if only I wore one. If you are into technical Death Metal that engulfs both brutality and melody, you really should not pass this one by. More EPs are announced and I, for one, look forward to hearing them.
