HALLUX VALGUS
Reflections Of Distant Dreams
(Ex Nihilo Music)

Is that a cat on the cover? Well, it surely is! HALLUX VALGUS surely have managed to get my immediate attention even without hitting play! “Reflections Of Distant Dreams” is a killer Death / Thrash album with elements of Death’n’Roll sprinkled across. For starters it is absolutely engaging and flows through with ease, the band feels very natural and at home playing this music. I’d say a mix of approach from “Scream Bloody Gore” coupled with a Chris Reifert inspired vocal attack. Although the mix feels slightly thin, HALLUX VALGUS have written some excellent riffs and guitar parts that keep you completely engaged from start to finish. The drumming stands out! Excellent rolls and fills from time to time without being a time keeping machine make for good additions on the album. I suppose on the whole HALLUX VALGUS keep the South American tradition alive of aggressive delivery coupled with excellent musicianship. “Reflections Of Distant Dreams” isn’t a landmark by any standard, but it is surely enjoyable. The production on the whole could use a kick, but this works just as fine in the present format. I’d have loved to see the instruments given more space to breathe and fester into something evil. If you haven’t heard HALLUX VALGUS, do check them out. This is a fun record and will make for an excellent companion during driving.
