Lovecraftian Death Metal? Hell yeah! HORRENDUM VERMIS hail from Buenos Aires, Argentina and deal with the absolute primitive form of Death Metal known to mankind and I love such releases. HORRENDUM VERMIS know the template they’ve got to operate on, so they do what any functioning creative unit does, they improvise. At the helm of all songwriting is a throwback to the classic skeleton of Death Metal, but the band adds in absolutely melodic solos and interweaving guitar play that is stunning to listen to time and again. Just track # 1, ‘ Erratic Manifestations Of Formless Creatures’, is sufficient to convince any Death Metal fan to check this album out in its entirety. The vocalist is angry, ferocious and you feel it in your bone. The guitars stand out, this is a stellar display of musicianship which does not let go of the tradition, but manages to branch into a new direction without any cliches. Track # 2, ‘ Omen Of Repugnants Gods’, is a cross between BOLT THROWER and AMON AMARTH which is an excellent sign! The rhythms are simple, they keep the pace in check, the vocals are death deep, which probably echo in the netherworlds everytime we play this album. Am I surprised a band from Argentina is doing so well? Not at all! This is in the blood of South America and I’m delighted to be listening to another well put together record. All fans of Death Metal and the loyal subgenres crawl out of your caves and TV’s. Check out HORRENDUM VERMIS to remind you of the glory days with soulful solos and an unrelenting rhythm section. I am absolutely enjoying every moment of this and would recommend you get this album as soon as possible. My only complaint is it could’ve been 15-20 mins shorter, a full one hour of such aggressive music would lead some of you to equip for zombie hunting at unholy hours.
