Another very special outfit from Italy. It seems our southern friends have always something special to offer, it was already true in the 70’s, and it remains true today. KARNAK are heavily involved into Techno-Death, as their music is extremely complex while being brutal. I can cite ATHEIST, later days DEATH and MEKONG DELTA as obvious influences here, even if KARNAK have developed their own brand of warped music. The band doesn’t hesitate to add unusual elements to the brutal core of their compositions, like Jazz breaks and a somewhat unusual way to insert keyboards touches here and there. Sometimes KARNAK’s music reminds me of an eerie and scary film score, and one can even feel unease while listening to this album (and this is a compliment, be sure of that!) The production on the CD is fantastic, the drums in particular have beneficiated of a good treatment, enough to show how much Stefano Rumich is a talented drummer, excellent performance really. Singer Seby (no longer with the band when I am writing this) shrieks a little like Chuck on the last few DEATH albums, so I suppose we face a “love it / hate it” situation here. My complaints concern the rather silly title of the album, and the sometimes exaggerated need that the KARNAK musicians have to show out their playing abilities, especially when they go for a Jazz break, they lost me then, when they seem to look after complexity for complexity’s sake on some occasions. This album is certainly not one I could listen to on a daily basis, it is more oriented towards musicians than anybody else, and it demands time to get into. So I recommend it in priority to aspiring musicians (especially drummers) and to the lovers of highly technical Metal. I can compare this with the fantastic last December WOLVES offering when it comes to the overall creepy and disturbing atmosphere. This album is truly an achievement, and I hope the KARNAK dudes will find their audience, because they deserve it! Excellent!
