Hellenic veterans KAWIR dropped their ninth full-length “Kydoimos”. For over three decades, Greece’s KAWIR have crafted distinctively epic Black Metal inspired by the legends and myths of ancient Hellas. On their new album “Kydoimos”, the sextet demonstrates once more their mastery of capturing mythology’s grandness within passionate and dynamic songs. Across nine tracks and just over an hour, KAWIR summons an immersive intensity through varied structures and layered arrangements. Opening with the martial march ‘Hecatonchires’, the band immediately transports listeners to antiquity. Guest vocalist Jim Mutilator lends grit to the giant god’s uprising, setting an appropriately epic tone. Standouts like ‘Echetlaeus’ showcase KAWIR’s melodic roots, compelling riffs flowing amid sweeping keys and guest tenor Ilias Zervas’ rousing performance. Lead singer Porphyrion delivers moving screams and rasps to evoke ancient Greek drama. ‘Kasandra’ tells the tragic prophetic foretold fall of Troy with stirring melancholy. Throughout the record, Therthonax and Lason shred shimmering lead harmonies over the tight rhythmic foundation of Agisilaos’ complex drumming and Epameinondas’ rumbling bass. Dis Pater’s keys and choirs enrich each composition, transporting listeners thoroughly within Greek legends. The album’s pinnacle arrives with its sprawling title track and finale ‘War Is The Father Of All’. It summons the band’s gifted depth, evolving through dramatic movements with uplifting melodies and ferocious aggression. With all that, these Greek veterans prove once more their status among Metal’s elder statesmen, by crafting this engrossing tribute to hellenic heritage through commanding musicianship and conceptual vision. For any fans of ROTTING CHRIST, VARATHRON, NECROMENTIA, “Kydoimos” shows KAWIR’s unique mastery of merging Metal’s power and mythology’s timeless tales and should stands among their most accomplished works in a storied catalog.
