MANTICORE
Behold The Ascension Of The Execrated

Checking on the background of Ohio’s MANTICORE, I came to realize that it is one of those long running underground bands that never have compromised their reputation. Formed back in the year 2000, they have been steadily releasing material, including this one, their 3rd full length. It’s great to know that there are still bands that stick to their guns, no matter what. So here I am, giving MANTICORE’s "Behold The Ascension Of The Execrated" its 4th listen. And I still can’t get past their production. Specially that odd guitar tone. I can understand that their brand of late 80s Black / Death, needs that obscure, almost muffled sound. But I have limits and this is where the line is drawn. Since I haven’t heard their previous works, I can’t say if there has been an evolution in their music. One thing is for sure; one can’t deny there is a lot of atmosphere in this record. It is repugnant and disgusting and just lingers all over, creeping in slowly. The "diabolus in musica" concept applies perfectly here. Execution wise, the drums tend to stay in the mid-paced / fast side. And they (surprisingly) sound good. Followed by the pounding of the bass guitar, that keeps things heavy as f*ck. Riff-wise, there is nothing much to say. The guitar tone is all broken and saturated. Aside from the drums, I think the vocals steal the show here. It’s been some time since I have heard this display of anger and hate. I think that the vocal performance was honest and full of attitude. But, I just didn’t find any hooks interesting enough to keep me listening to the whole album, past the guitar tone. So, fans and die hards of the Black / Death style à la THE ROYAL ARCH BLASPHEME, DEMONCY and ARCHGOAT, MANTICORE’s "Behold The Ascension Of The Execrated" is 100% recommended.
