I’ve always wondered how the South American Metal scene, back in the 80s, spawned that many great bands. Even the most obscure and unknown bands had their good moments. Well, I guess no one will ever know. What I do know is that 5 or 6 years ago, the South American invasion started again. And it seems they’ve managed to keep the flame burning. And MAZE OF TERROR, hailing from Peru, is a fine example of that. Country mate Capricorn Records has just released MAZE OF TERROR’s debut EP. 5 tracks with a total of 25 minutes of absolute Thrash / Death Metal worship. I hate comparisons, but in this case, I think they are more than well deserved. The first two bands that came to my mind after listening to "Skullcrusher", were ATOMIC AGGRESSOR and DEATH YELL. A Thrash Metal frenzy combined with enough Death Metal to balance the equation perfectly. Certain parts resemble the good old hyper fast Teutonic Thrash Metal mixed with classic Death Metal à la POSSESSED. Oh, and hate, tons and tons of hate. Soundwise, "Skullcrusher" takes you back to the early 90s. The drums are muffled, the bass is buried a little too much with the guitars and the vocals up front. But the final mix feels good. There is also a raw aura around the production. It is not perfect or polished, which is good, but I found some parts that sound thin. Especially the guitar tone. But that’s only me being really detail-oriented. Besides that, MAZE OF TERROR’s "Skullcrusher" is one of those nice surprises that one never really expected. A hidden gem that has all the potential to become an underground classic, such as "Bloody Ceremonial" or "Vengeance From Darkness". Totally recommended.
