So I have another solo project to review. I fear the higher Metal gods above are punishing me for my words and feelings about solo projects in my prior review. So today we delve into MIRROR, a solo project hailing from Spain. So maybe partially due to my aforementioned feelings on solo projects or for other reasons, this project has never been on my radar. What you have here is plenty of BOLT THROWER, ASPHYX and CIANIDE. At four songs this could qualify as a demo of sorts, but the sole member Guadaña Afilada, has been producing output since 2004. A healthy amount of releases, I must say. So having established their sound, but you may ask what is the overall vibe of this release? First the good. The guitar sound is on point and definitely has the BOLT THROWER sound and for you newbies FROZEN SOUL. I do have a series of negatives though. One drawback I have on the onset is the vocals. I can’t confirm if it is on purpose or if the sound is a bit off in the mix or what? They seem to be weirdly muffled. Also from what I can hear the drums seem to be programmed and are very simplistic. There are moments within the songs that draw you in with that pummeling groove, but then at times, the songwriting seems a tad samey and disjointed. I am in a bit of turmoil that in one respect things should be more established and cohesive with his overall history. But it’s because of that I hate to be a bit negative in what I’m hearing. All in all, nothing to be immediately tossed into the trash bin, but could maybe draw those into that ‘Death Doom‘ genre. https://mirror1.bandcamp.com, www.facebook.com/visceralcircuitryrecs
