It took them an incredible long time to release an album, that’s for sure! MURDER SQUAD is a side project of DISMEMBER and ENTOMBED members and has been around for ages already. I still remember rehearsal tapes of the guys that were circulating many years ago and that (almost?) exclusively consisted of AUTOPSY cover songs. Well, by telling you this, I more or less already gave away the secret of MURDER SQUAD’s own musical direction. These maniacs are nothing but die hard AUTOPSY worshippers and with this twelve track release they’ve quite obviously tried to come as close to the original as possible. “Unsane, Insane And Mentally Deranged” also has this dirty rotten sound and indeed re-captures the sick AUTOPSY feel in a very impressive way. But MURDER SQUAD is not AUTOPSY and Matti Kärki not Chris Reifert. Even though the DISMEMBER frontman really did a fantastic job, he’s simply lacking in the insane voice of Reifert. And there’s a similar problem with the drumming. Peter Stärnvind is a good drummer, but a big part of AUTOPSY’s uniqueness is the drum sound and unmistakable playing style, which MURDER SQUAD didn’t fully manage to recapture on “Unsane, Insane And Mentally Deranged”. Apart from that, this is a fantastic and extremely raw record that even blows away the latest ENTOMBED and DISMEMBER releases. A record, that every true supporter of brutal old school Death Metal simply will adore!
