Yes, I admit it. NERVOCHAOS is a band which I am a bit biased; one of the few Brazilian bands I have seen live constantly over the last five years, with a peculiar Death Metal style which may have not given them the same exposure than their fellow countrymen KRISIUN, but has served them well to put the band as as one of the prime moving forces on the wide Latin American underground landscape. “Nyctophilia” is the seventh studio album of this four-piece band based in Sao Paulo, and the first opus with guitar players Cherry Taketani and Lauro “Nightrealm” Bonimetti, this one also on vocals. Both are in the band since 2015, joining NERVOCHAOS’ mainman, drummer and founding member Eduardo Lane and bassist Thiago Andusclas, who had previously been in the band from 2004 to 2008 and who is back to the bass duties since 2016. There is a nice, enjoyable array of songs ranging from the relentless riff attack found on the opening ‘Moloch Rise’ and ‘Midnight Hunter’ to the groovier ‘Ad Majoriem Satana Gloriam’, a track included in the band’s set list during their 2007 tour with KRISIUN, the mid-paced, ‘Season Of The Witch’, or the combination of all these previously mentioned elements, blending in the final track ‘Live Like A Suicide’, a track ending with the famous Lovecraftian quote “yet with strange aeons, even day may die”. The production is thick, the snare drum sounds quite powerful and the guitar tone improves your listening experience, and the musicianship and variety found on songs such as the aforementioned ‘Midnight Hunter’, ‘Lord Death’ and ‘Rites Of 13 Cemeteries’ proves once again that NERVOCHAOS know their craft, and know how to write catchy, and abrasive, Death Metal anthems. “Nyctophilia” may not be a groundbreaking album, but it sure is a well-executed, enjoyable, compendium of litanies devoted to the warriors of the left hand path and worshippers of death everywhere. www.facebook.com/nervochaos, www.cogumelo.com
