NEW WORLD DEPRESSION

This German band formed in 2005 and this is already their sixth album. Their name sounds a bit weird for a Death Metal band, but I guess that after some thinking it also does fit what this crazy world sometimes is all about. The lyrics deal with the real world torments and to remind you that we are here to suffer and ultimately die… ok, well add some good food, beer and Metal and then it’s not so miserable after all. With so many releases, I went to listen to the early efforts of the band first. Their style of Death Metal is similar to that of MORGOTH, especially from the “Odium” days, yet the band is never really that fast. It’s more groove, something that it’s not exactly what I am looking for in Death Metal. I guess a few bits of groove are ok, if you use it like OBITUARY in their early albums, or if you are just too damn good like mighty BOLT THROWER, both bands that are also influences in this German Death machine. A few bits of faster parts got thrown in here and there for good measure. The vocals are more or less your usual Death Metal low growling, not bad, not extraordinary, but at least the vocalist tries to stay away from sounding too generic. In what this new album does shine more than their previous works is the production. They definitely nailed it great in this one. Very heavy, and that makes the groovy side of the music (which is quite a lot actually) also sound heavier and darker. The vocals also sound better in this new album, almost near mighty Karl Willett’s type. And there’s probably more up-tempo parts, but the band still sounds comfortable playing at a controlled speed but with such heavy guitar sound, that it’s very enjoyable. If they just keep it in this way, using less groove (or still using it wisely, as it’s part of their sound) and they go more for that crushing ASPHYXiating sound while invoking the Warmasters, I’m waiting for their next strike with anxiety and fear of my life.
