When I read the description that NONEXISTENCE’s sound is close to KATATONIA and SHINING I was tempted to find out more. In that context, I was somehow let down since NONEXISTENCE do not sound like either of the aforementioned bands although they have some elements that bring them to mind. Let’s not fool ourselves, almost none contemporary band can even get close to the feel of old KATATONIA. This style of desolate Dark / Black Metal is extremely hard to deliver and even harder to copy. The only band that – for me at least – got close to the bleak essence of “Brave Murder Day” was none other than BLAZING ETERNITY in their debut album “Times And Unknown Waters”. Ok, back to NONEXISTENCE now, I consider that this band is closely affiliated with the atmospheric Black Metal sound of ’97-98. Hopefully they do not sound like some of the “parody” bands that existed back then due to the “atmospheric” Black Metal trend, but contrary to that NONEXISTENCE seem to have a good idea of what they are doing. Their purpose is mainly to create dark and atmospheric songs with loads of dismal melancholy in them and it seems that everything works into that direction: nice vocals (interchanging between brutal and clean), space-like keyboards (with some ambient moments) and an overall good production. To sum it up, some pretty nice ideas exist here and there and NONEXISTENCE deliver an overall decent album. For further information check: www.nonexistence666.com
