Depressive, dark and eerie Black Metal that should appeal to fans of BURZUM, XASTHUR, JUDAS ISCARIOT or NACHTMYSTIUM offers this German trio. Whereas a lot of suicidal, melancholic Black Metal bands or better “projects” tend to use drum computers NYKTALGIA have a hammering human beast behind the kit and though each of the long songs summons a freezing cold atmosphere it isn’t ruined by any sterile moments but sounds and feels organic, authentic and intense. I could not find out anything about NYKTALGIA’s members and their musical past, but they sound too good to be youngsters… “Nyktalgia” is a mysterious, icy journey filled with harsh hatefulness and bleak despair to equal parts and comes across in a perfect raw, yet powerful sound. It might not be a very original album, but the dedication with which this black piece of art was forged deserves to be honoured and in contrast to many other bands NYKTALGIA create pretty diversified soundscapes with acoustic guitar parts, effective tempo changes and elaborated ideas. If you have a soft spot for forlorn sounding, aggressive and desolate Black Metal try this act, they are definitely one of the better acts in this subcategory of Black Metal. Impressive debut! www.no-colours-records.de
