Well, here’s Morbid Chapel Records, my old friend from Poland. A label that’s been trying to dig out the absolute scum from the ends of the earth and has been putting those sounds and beats onto CDs. I’ve had the privilege of reviewing a bunch of their releases in the past and I had high expectations when I started listening to OBSIDIAN HOOVES. Muddy, raw, cavernous and sick to the bone is how I’d describe the sound of OBSIDIAN HOOVES. Jared Moran aka Cave Ritual is a prominent figure in the underground, I knew of him from his time in COSMIC ATROPHY. He knows his Death Metal and he has no issues expressing his innermost turmoil using his throat and drums as a medium. A medium that is highly regarded! OBSIDIAN HOOVES is your traditional late ’80s Death Metal produced in a dungeon with no lighting. The band has zero intention of remotely sticking with the current state of Death Metal. They’ve used the late ’80s to early ’90s bands as their template and stuck to their guns. Every single track here is on point, the vocals almost always stand out, next come the riffs which are relentless and cut through the denseness of the atmosphere. Track # 2, ‘Inception’s Release’ is perhaps the best representation of the band’s sound. A gentle descent into the puddle, deep vocals, raw drumming with MORBID ANGEL – esque solos and let’s not forget a suffocating atmosphere which make this song an absolute delight. This is really well done Death Metal that I believe fans of old school Death Metal will thoroughly enjoy.
