When it comes to the Chilean extreme Metal scene, the names PENTAGRAM CHILE, INVOCATION and UNAUSSPRECHLICHEN KULTEN are often the most thrown about. Within its rich underground, there are dozens of other acts that haven’t quite reached international notoriety, one of them being ONSLAUGHT KOMMAND. ONSLAUGHT KOMMAND play old school Death Metal, harking back to the golden age of early 1990s style. Grim, dark, gore-soaked and guttural, “Malignancy”, released through Godz Ov War Productions, is a blistering exhibition of filth, serving as the band’s debut album. One of the two things is noticed immediately upon playback, the production and the huge low-end presence in the mix. Far too many modern Death Metal bands overproduce their records, resulting in sterile, run-of-the-mill and sonically harmless recordings that barely differentiate from one another. ONSLAUGHT KOMMAND opted for a route in which, sonically, things are still rough around the edges. For one, there is a huge low-end presence on “Malignancy”, one that is unusual for the current generation of Death Metal, that really fills out and completes the overall sound. The guitars have a gruff tone to them, rather than something polished down to a mirror finish like many current-era bands are doing. The vocals are deep, nasty and guttural. Overall, there is a lot of low-end on “Malignancy” and it does a terrific job filling out and completing the sound. Across 32 minutes are 14 songs, with only one track breaking the three-minute mark, so the ideas executed here are straight to the point and devoid of pointless fluff or theatrics. There are no grand introductions, lengthy bridges, or even many leads on “Malignancy”, opting instead for a caveman-like approach of barreling drums, churning riffs and barbaric compositions that are confrontational and in-your-face. Tracks such as opener ‘Elite Hunting Gore’, showcase a crushing rhythm section that alternates between hammer blasts, blast beats and dynamic tom fills married to a simple four-chord primary riff that easily proves less is more. ‘Pissrot Humiliation’ and ‘Becoming A Gut Pile’ show off a groove-centered writing style that points more to modern Goregrind. ‘Satanic Storming’ and ‘Pervert Goat Kommand’, bring forth an old school intensity that revisits the Death Metal demo days of 1986 – 1990, a wild and crushing fury of riffs, blasting drums and sewer deep vocals. ‘Inside The Mutilator’s Bunker’ plays like mincing old school Grindcore, like vintage CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER merging with demo-era CARCASS. ‘Carbonized At The Lynching Tree’ really shows off the prowess of drummer Cvnthvnt, opening with a crushing battery of alternating snares and bass drum before switching over to a Thrash-style beat loaded with rapid-fire snare flourishes. The guitar duo of Necromancer and Behemot double one another frequently to create huge sounding riff work that would whip a live crowd into a frenzy, add in the surprisingly clear and mix-heavy bass work of SplatterHate and the end result is genuine old school glory. If you’re into old school Death Metal, especially from the always volatile South American scene, you cannot go wrong with “Malignancy”. ONSLAUGHT KOMMAND put forth a valiant effort here and their execution and vintage tonality are worth a listen.
