OSCULUM OBSCENUM / CAVERNAL
Feeding On Southern Horror

If southern horror is what the two bands on this split release deliver, I am ready to feed on southern horror the rest of my life! The two Chilean bands OSCULUM OBSCENUM and CAVERNAL, both new acquaintances to me, are delivering intense and ‘banging Death Metal in that old school way, that only South American bands can make nowadays, without sounding rehashed or tacky! CAVERNAL is a young quartet that started in 2018, spewing out mid-paced grinding Death Metal with a dark thrashy touch on the riffing. It’s grim and haunting, leaning towards impending Doom that drags you down in a nice black hole. The growls are drenched in heavy reverb and it works. The production is messy, the output raw, yet hooking – quite charming. Tracks that start with chiming church bells, screeching crows and people screaming as everything around them is going into flames, always win with me, I’m a simple man! OSCULUM OBSCENUM’s ‘Osculum Obscenum’ is starting in exact that manner and I’m hooked from the first riff! OSCULUM OBSCENUM has been around since 2013 and has released two demos and an EP before this split. The three tracks the band is delivering is mid-paced old school Death Metal, quite traditional and ass kicking. The band isn’t out to revolutionize anything, they have given the old Gods some heavy listens and have figured out, what is working and not – and is delivering some intense and pummeling Death Metal. The growls in Spanish work really well and add a dimension that we, or at least I’m, not too used to. The melodic guitar work on ‘Proceso Cadavérico Incompleto’ works quite as well – and gives away a big affection for CARCASS, which isn’t that bad – an affection that also can be heard on the two other tracks, for that matter. This split showcases some serious Death Metal and has more or less just seen a release on cassette tape – so if you come across it, pick it up – these two bands will make a lot more noise in the future, I’m quite sure about that!
