Let me tell you something: I’m in love! I’m in love with this debuting demo from French trio REPUGNIZER! And it was love at first listen! A few days ago, I found a tiny parcel, sent from Berlin, in my letterbox. I unpacked it and anticipation took me immediately when I saw that simple, but great cover artwork. Waiting was out of question, so I carefully took out the cassette and put it in my tape deck. And what I heard just blew me away! I had to look at the tape’s inlay twice to be sure that these five songs were recorded in 2016 and not in 1987 or 1988. The scabious production of “ Face-Melting Apocalypse” sounds like it was recorded directly in the rehearsing room, but it fits the musical direction of REPUGNIZER perfectly. And what direction can we expect? Well the furious French helps us travel back in time to an era, when Death Metal was not really born, let alone popular. Those times when there were extreme Metal bands around who exceeded the limits and thus paved the way for the real extreme. I’m talking about acts like REPULSION, IMPETIGO, NECROPHAGIA and SLAUGHTER here, those rabid and simple bands who are now referred to as “Proto Death Metal”. REPUGNIZER have learned their lesson so well, it is a pure delight to listen to their interpretation of the ideas of the forefathers of Death and Grind. From the first riff of the fast massacring opener ‘Acid Terror’, every minute of the (sadly only) thirteen minutes of this tape is a pure joy. Especially the SLAUGHTER inspired ‘Parasitic Mind-Control’ and the mid-tempo grinder ‘Rigor Mortic Romance’ made me bang my head in joy. The distorted up tempo slasher ‘Filth-Devouring Freak’ and the diversified title track end the rotten first tape of a band that surely will release some genre classics-to-be.
