So I was just listening to AVULSED (their latest “Phoenix Cryptobiosis”) and also reading some missives about the band. In some of the critiques, people express much of the lack of innovation and the continued unoriginal output from the band, despite having been in existence since the early nineties. Now I mention this comparison because, granted, there may be some basis to that fact, I would like to draw your attention to, maybe a much more deserving and perhaps true recipient of your ire and for the Metal community as a whole. Some of my steadfast readers and those of the longstanding Metal community (ie., meaning old) know that I’ve been a card-carrying denim and leather Metal fan since way before Glen Benton scarred his forehead and Dani Filth first thought of the supreme vampiric evil. I could express more in the age adages, but I do have to take my rheumatism pills and change my adult diapers, so we will leave it at that. So, back to my original point, full disclosure. I will say I have a bit of an issue with Mr. J and his multitude of releases across various band names and / or musical associations. I truly want to like this, but I continue to be struck by the fact that if I praise this release, what makes it so different from band #3 or #12 or #25? There is truly a lack of variety and / or distinction between bands #8 or #16 and even #31, or even just something to say, “Dude, you just have to listen to this”. Besides, a different vocalist here and a different lyrical theme there, it does not promote a sense of individuality; there is not much to be excited about. There is no feeling of thrill or anticipation of having that next new release because you have been waiting months, years, even for your favorite band to drop their latest material on us. Nope, we got this one right now, and just wait till next Tuesday, and band #21 will have their release to drop on you. I truly hate coming across as a grouchy ol MF, but I will go with AVULSED before getting excited about the next release from the prolific Rogga. In all fairness, I will say I do like some of the products Mr J has spat out. I do tap into occasionally some of the PAGANIZER output and probably enjoy LEPER COLONY the most, mainly because of the esteemed Marc Grewe (MORGOTH, yeah I know you knew that) involvement. As for the music itself, it is a watered-down Swedeath, with melodic elements scattered throughout. At times, I can say that I get an early EDGE OF SANITY vibe happening. At 10 songs, it is all kinda similar and not too much to really expand on or just to hype up. Nothing is really pushing the needle to make one stand up and take notice. Once again, that little splinter that dwells in my mind is just bugging me. Is this better than band #5, or perhaps band #25 has a better songwriting approach? I can partly understand those that are true Metalhead completionists, and you have to have everything, but I will say don’t be, because you will go broke before you gather everything that Mr. J has contributed to the scene. My advice to you and also my approach as well is to find those two or three bands amongst his library and focus on said bands’ material and enjoy just those. I will say though, that it gives us artists a chance to display some cool ass band art because some of his bands have had some stunning displays of cover art. Take the time and look into things.
