We all know the old proverb of the boxing language: "They never come back!" Boxing itself proved this to be wrong more than once. As far as Death Metal is concerned, it’s completely invalid and should be changed into: "They always come back!" Sooner or later, nearly any band that recorded at least a demo in the 1990s is back all of a sudden. Some of these bands even release new material, which is in most cases at least solid stuff. Now it is ROTTREVORE from Pennsylvania, who released an album called "Iniquitous" in 1993 after two 7"es and a demo tape, which were compiled for the "Disembodied" CD in 2005. After their unspectacular split in 1995, the band was on hiatus for sixteen years before they reunited and recorded a new 3 song demo called "Blind Sided Attack" last year. Now this demo is officially released by the Spanish label Xtreem Music under the appetizing name "Hung By The Eyesockets". Even though ROTTREVORE are a signature band for brutal Death Metal and thus achieved a cult status, they passed me by completely up to now. So I checked the stuff out on the net and yeah, I really have missed something… Brutal Death with dominant doomy grooves, grinding outbreaks and guttural vocals, not spoiled by too much virtuosity and complexity. These trademarks also serve as a perfect description of the new EP as well. Add a production, that is very much up to date, but not sterilized or clean, but filthy, tight and compact and you get a gourmand food for the rotten. All three songs are great, even though they needed two or three run-throughs to achieve my complete acclaim. But then, both title tracks (old and new) wake my dizzy brain after a long night. And the final ‘Overcome With Hate’ became my fave here, due to its relentless riffing and the brilliant breaks. Conclusion? A band worth to have made a comeback!
