SARVEKAS
Of Atavistic Fury & Visions
(Soulseller Records)

From time to time it occurs that I am starting a special theme day when it comes to picking my daily dose of music. Sometimes old demos (favorite one these days MALVOLENT CREATION “The Demos” re-issue by Vic Records), sometimes just live albums (highly recommended the current ones by AUTOPSY and SULPHUR AEON) and sometimes listening to just one band. Recently I was listening to DARK FUNERAL the whole day long and, what a coincidence, at the same time I received the debut EP by SARVEKAS from Finland. The duo from the land of the thousands lakes is shooting out a strong signal towards the worldwide Black Metal community. Five tracks recorded and mixed at Ragged Sound Studio by Juha Nikkanen and mastered by Kari Laaksonen (Raja-Audio), performed by skilled musicians. Two aspects make this output a bit more interesting than other Black Metal releases. First the heavy melodic guitar leads, which can easily match up with the current albums by NAGLFAR and NECROPHOBIC. And secondly the dynamic songwriting. It is really pure joy to listen how each song develops without losing focus. Regarding the atmosphere it is well balanced between aggressive and and that special bittersweet feeling the mentioned melodic Death Metal acts are able to evoke. Hopefully the debut album by SARVEKAS has a bit more serious cover than the cheesy one used for “Of Atavistic Fury & Visions”. Still wondering about the blue figure in the middle – looks like a teeth or naked backside. If the sword is supposed to replace the spine the bony thorax / ribs are drawn far away from any anatomical correct shape. Since I am an intensive care nurse this simply hurts my eyes. On the other side a Black Metal cover never meant to be an anatomy model. Last information: Soulseller Records are releasing this exquisite debut both as digipak CD and 12” vinyl edition.
