I first laid ears upon this Hungarian band last year, when the mastermind D sent me his "Forgotten Visions" effort. Earlier this year he sent me his, then, newest recordings, the "Cursed Woods" demo, a release I’ve used quite some time to get into. And I can see that SOLUS has been productive ever since this demo was released, as the band since then has gotten an anthology and two split releases under the belt. We are still in the realm of melancholic and bleak Black Metal, a mix between ambient pieces that makes your thoughts flow far away and then grimmer parts, which are very melancholic this time, quite catching and cold, with some remarkably pronounced vocals, which works well. Take a track as ‘Awakening Of The Ancient Woods’ which I almost had given up on, as the intro drags on a bit too long, for my taste, though when the eerie and cold guitar sets in with an incredible and dry tone, one is getting caught up in the atmosphere and drawn even further in when the vocals set in. A pretty, dark and sinister track. I could have done without the long build-ups and just have enjoyed the music straight on, though when that is said SOLUS delivers some massive melancholic and bleak atmospheres that is hard not to get sucked into, intense and dark and very personal, a gray corner of existence which we don’t enter to often. I like to get lost in the universe of SOLUS. http://solushun.weebly.com, www.facebook.com/pages/solus/253808604657631, http://rottencrowz.blogspot.com
