Great to see another sign of life from those Mexican hopefuls SOUL EATER. I was and still am totally blown away by their fuckin’ incredible debut album “Satanic Discharge” (see review elsewhere on the Voices page) and I have a quite regular listen to this album now and then – which is quite unusual, if you ask me, in the current times where you listen to an album a few times – talking about a very good one – and put it in the rack afterwards forever. Happy as I am I received from Joel (guitar / vocals) their new 4 song promo CD already a while ago and immediately I gave it a try and from this time on I keep listening to it on a steady base. OK, one thing at first: it’s not as great as their “Satanic Discharge” album (which is no surprise for me – as I said: an incredible debut album), but still an amazing new output from those youngsters. On the sleeve you can see a picture of those 4 really young looking guys, mentioned are only three though. Don’t know what’s up with the 4th guy on the picture and musically speaking this has no influence on this review at all. 4 songs included here in a playing time of almost 13 minutes. Good quality Death Thrashing madness with less Punk influences as on their debut album, but more Death Metallish brutallity. Not only this, with this recording the guys moved a little bit to the hectic Thrash genre and left their Punk roots behind them, which is a little sad thing as these influences really made them special in my eyes. Now they are one more band of the common Thrash revival thing, which isn’t meant negative at all. The guys once more convince with solid musicianship and the soundquality of this recording is fantastic for just a promo. What might sound a little negative in this review is not meant as that, as “Hymns Of Possession” offers among the best stuff I heard in a while and from my side it’s still two thumbs up for them. Nevertheless I have high hopes to have them back as heard on their “Satanic Discharge” album again, as this really made them special. And, damn, I want those high pitched screams as on ‘Thrash Metal Dogs’ (from their debut) more often, haha. Check some of the songs out on their myspace page www.myspace.com/souleaterband and get in touch with the guys.
