THE GREAT OLD ONES

Yet another act looks to the Cthulu mythos for inspiration (Mr. Lovecraft’s photograph even appears in this band’s line-up!). This time, it is a French band playing a very expansive and well-produced blend of Black Metal and Post Metal. Imagine a mixture of BLUT AUS NORD style disharmony blended with the wide-open atmospherics of Post Metal (see the less claustrophobic sections of TWILIGHT for example), and you’ll get a general idea of the band. I would regard this record as more of ‘road-trip’ type listen (or one listened to while studying / reading), than one for furious headbanging / heart arrhythmia / breaking bottles over your friend’s head. The album unfolds not unlike an atmospheric movie with little dialogue or outright violence – a sojourn deep into a shadowy and forbidding continent.
