Italy is not really known for a large and great Death Metal scene. Yet there’s of course some Death Metal from the country known for its ancient legacy of the Roman Empire. Talking about Rome: the band I introduce to you today is from this town so rich of history. THRONE OF FLESH is a rather fresh band, as the four-piece is around for five years now, and has their first physical release out. It’s an EP entitled “Dust” that features harsh Death Metal with some diversity to give a break from the fury. Somehow I feel reminded of the old US Death Metal bands from the early 1990s, which is not the worst reference. Yet I’m not really electrified by the songs on “Dust”, as sometimes the songs or some of the parts are too chaotic in my ears. Or, even worse, sometimes THRONE OF FLESH are even a little bit overambitious. On the other hand, some ideas are quite fine, like the classic Metal solo part in ‘Exhumation Of The Ancients’ or the unique slow and heavy second part of the final song ‘བྱ་གཏོར’ (transcribed: ‘Bya Gtor’, translates as ‘Sky Burial’, according to Google). “Dust” gives us both shadow and light, and more progressive or technical minded Death Metal listeners might give it a try. Asides from the six tracks of the EP, this disc also features the songs from the first THRONE OF FLESH release “Dogma” that was put out as a digital demo in 2019 as bonus, making this release a full length. And these songs are more enjoyable for me, since they are less ambitious. Of course they are not overly unique, but especially ‘Inverted’ really got me, a driving tune that reminds of older CARCASS. So these songs are a quite fine extra that really saved my day. If you’re interested, check www.facebook.com/throneofflesh or www.facebook.com/greatdanerecords
