TOD HUETET UEBEL are a Black Metal duo from Portugal and this is their most recent release, an intense 20-something minutes EP featuring two songs. The lyrics are written in Portuguese (with some passages in English in the second, much longer song) and are deeply poetic and deeply impregnated with literary locus horrendus, drawing from the wealth of Portuguese writers that dwelled in pessimistic themes. The homage is explicit in the inclusion of a quotation from the experimental expressionist oeuvre "Húmus" by Raúl Brandão (TOD HUETET UEBEL aim, I suspect, at being equally experimental and expressionist), and a quotation from a sonnet by Antero de Quental. It is remarkable to perceive the care in the elaboration of these lyrics, which express deep anguish, loss and hopelessness. "Nada" means "nothing" in Portuguese, and I noticed the wordplay of splitting the word into "nå" (adding the ring) and "da", meaning "now" and "then" in Norwegian. Likewise, the vocals by Marcos M. take pains (literally I believe) to convey a pool of affliction, resorting to much experimentation as well. They are nearly omnipresent, multi-layered, and emitted through screams, howls, cries and shrieks in a veritable performance that is much impressive. The unsettling, extreme ambiance that is created in this frantic way owes about as much to the insane and complex, yet musical, structures created by Daniel C. that evoke a descent into madness. The cover artwork, purportedly inked in blood, serves the same purpose, and apparently the band is very thorough with the details of their artistic offerings. Even though this could in all propriety be termed depressive Black Metal, it is not only very well produced and played, but also very fast for most of the time, with the drums even reaching superhuman speed once or twice.
