Hailing from Finland, TORMENTICON are a long running band that seems to be in no rush to get their songs released. There’s no other explanation that they only recorded ten songs in at least twenty years of existence. Seven of them were released as an untitled album in 2010, yet only about half of the songs were recorded for the album, the rest was laid down in 2002 already. Three more songs were used for a compilation / split release last year. The untitled album can be filed under “solid debut album”, nothing more, but also nothing less. The music on “Tormenticon” mostly refers to old English Doom Death Metal, names like MY DYING BRIDE or ANATHEMA come to mind here, which also implies a sense for nice melodies and harmonies as well. But the slower basic speed sometimes gets punctuated with some mid tempo breaks and faster parts which are the weak spots, as they sometimes sound a little sloppy. Yet songs like the opener ‘Unlight Earth’ or the older ‘Living Corpse’ are far from being bad. And maybe, with some years of time to develop their songwriting skills, a second album from TORMENTICON could be a great album. We are to find out!
