The Seven Gates Of Hell - Singles 1981 - 1985
(High Roller Records)
74:43min
Is there a need for a re-release of this singles collection? Well, if you don’t already have this essential compilation of all VENOM singles in your collection, then yes. If that’s the case, the High Roller version is definitely the best choice, because unlike the last release, you get a stylish slipcase, a poster, a thick booklet and the songs have also been remastered. In addition, VENOM fans can enjoy a new interview with Tony Bray, alias Abaddon, in written form. Furthermore, a live version of ‘Warhead’ has been added to the previous track list. However, the cult “Assault…” EPs are still not part of this compilation. On the other hand, the cover artwork is slightly prettier than before. Single collections by VENOM make sense in that the forefathers of Black Metal released some of their best songs only in single format, especially in the early phase of their career, and thus they were missing from the regular albums. Every Metalhead should know these songs, so I’ll spare you the details. Absolutely brilliant thrashing and pure Metal cult! Every song is a hit! It’s interesting that they changed the title of the collection. Previously, it was called “Singles 1980 – 1985”. Now it starts in 1981 (well, since this isn’t just a plain re-release, but a new compilation which features all seven singles of the band, including the 12″ versions, and since the first VENOM single ‘In League With Satan’ was released in 1981 it totally makes sense, doesn’t it? – Frank). Whether you need to add this to your collection again because of the differences mentioned is questionable, unless you’re a die-hard collector. But if you don’t already own this collection, you need to get it. www.facebook.com/officialvenomband, www.facebook.com/hrrecords
