“Rorschach” is the fifth album by this unholy Norwegian trinity of Black / Thrash maniacs called VESEN. Strongly influenced by teutonic old school institutions (SODOM, DESTRUCTION, DARKNESS, DEATHROW, etc.), the first thing you notice is the high production level, so you haven’t something too much raw and dirty here (as it’s used to be in this Metal subgenre). The first song, ‘Damnation Path’, is a good approach to what VESEN offers here: harsh vocals, fast and slow tempos on drums and simple and catchy riffs, plus a nice and well worked structure in the compositions, decorated sometimes with melodic arrangements. In general, the songs are very varied, offering diverse tempos in the rhythmic section – bass and drums – and some fresh ideas on guitars (arpeggios and effects here and there, constrasting with the absence of guitar solos on most of the songs). As was said, VESEN deliver a good set of compositions but they fault in giving more dynamism, intensity and a “chaotic” approach to their music, something you can find in their countrymates NEKROMANTHEON, for example. To be honest VESEN is not doing something really new here and for sure it is not their intention. Anyway, you can find here all the elements of an average contemporary Black / Thrash album. Favourite tracks? ‘Target: Horizon’, ‘Crown Of Scars’ and ‘Final Insult’. If you’re into bands like old BATHORY, AURA NOIR, old SODOM and VOMITOR, then this is for you.
