VREDENSDAL
Sonic Devotion To Darkness

The fourth full-length by the US Americans VREDENSDAL is one of those albums that makes the listeners happy, but constitute a problem for the reviewer. This is due to the fact that the style of the trio eludes a distinct definition. Black Metal, that much is clear, but when you ask which sub-genre, the answer is not easy at all. Eight songs (plus intro) with multiple influences, ranging from generic Black Metal of the first and second wave, Death Metal in the vein of BEHEMOTH, elements of Post Black Metal and the title song even knows how to surprise with its inclusions of Epic Metal. Sounds pretty jumbled up, but works surprisingly well for two reasons. On the one hand there is the technical side, because what use is the most exciting musical vision if you do not master your instruments. VREDENSDAL was founded 2018 by a Metalhead who calls himself “The Goblin Reaper” and from that point on the band constantly released material, so there are no beginners at work. The other aspect is quite simply that VREDENSDAL follows a red line that is less oriented towards elements of style and more towards the emotions that the music is supposed to evoke. Feelings of misanthropy, ferocity, desolation and despair. The genuine core of Black Metal, a sonic devotion to darkness. Rarely was an album title more appropriate!
