Unholy WAN are back with a new EP and luckily the title of their second album “Enjoy The Filth” from 2013 is still on the agenda. Neither people nor materials are spared here; everything, including the listeners, is subjected to an extreme test of performance. However, if you face this, you will be rewarded with an artistic vision that, even if it is perhaps overdone, represents the essence of early Black Metal. Musically deeply rooted in the ’80s, the Swedes manage the balancing act of sounding incredibly raw, primitive and brutal on the one hand, but on the other hand the songs are also well composed and have a wide range of variety, without leaving the boundaries. Bitterly cold and incredibly fast, rolling slowly with heavy riffs, WAN are mastering every tempo, the sound is also brutal to the point of pain, the incredibly sharp and precise riffs set the speakers on fire. But be careful, WAN has nothing to do with all the softened retro ’80s bands where you meet up in the rehearsal room for a few beers and cover a few old SODOM or HELLHAMMER songs. WAN are pretty serious and I am going to go out on a limb: after 37 years, MAYHEM’s “Deathcrush” EP has finally found a worthy successor.
