There is nothing wrong with being an douchebag, even Dostoyevski was one. The reasoning for such acceptance is to be proud of having the intelligence of assuming that mental state. And it’s better when blasphemy is in the middle of the breeding. WAN was conceived in 2009, in Eskilstuna, Sweden and performs Black Metal since their conception. They just released their fourth full-length entitled “Antichristian Douchebags” through Polish label Fallen Temple. In this LP, WAN plays a heavily influenced OMNIZIDE and DARKTHRONE – ish Black Metal (a mix of “Plaguewielder” and “F.O.A.D”), with some riffs that tend to create a fuck off attitude with some kind of dirty passion. This comparison can be heard in the opening track, ‘The Viper’, which starts with some down tempos to end with a fast part. Almost all thirteen songs maintain this formula, only ‘Midskog’ is a slow song, but it has the same kind of structure despite its speed. For the second half of “Antichristian Douchebags”, the musical creations are more agressive, rough and darker. ‘The End Of All Light’ and ‘Svartrid’ are the best examples for this asseveration. Well, some people think that if a band plays Black Metal, the production of their recording must sound raw and dirty, but something that “Antichristian Douchebags” has in general, is that the vocals are too high (specially in the choruses, where two voices are spitted at the same time), surpassing the other instruments in some tracks, getting completely lost as a result. I could not distingish the bass well enough all the times that I heard the record (only in ‘Roots Of Metal’ where the song started with it) and sometimes there are too much vocals, taking a lot of protagonism and making the battery and riffs something unpowerful. Don’t get me wrong, WAN plays good Black Metal, but with “Antichristian Douchebags” the lack of production and not making anything astounding, leaves the experience of listening to them kind of incomplete. “Antichristian Douchebags” is a record that could be listened to with some beers, in the middle of a horrible Sunday or for having a lunch with your father in law.
