It seems to become a small tradition that at the end of each year Canada is sending out their best bands to conquer the various Metal thrones. Last year the resurrected SACRIFICE impressed a lot of Metal heads with their comeback release “The Ones I Condemn” and in 2010 this honorable slot is given to the occult act WEAPON. I fully agree that their European label Agonia Records is giving “From The Devil’s Tomb” their full priority. The band was founded in 2003 and by just reading their biography the chosen mixture of US Death Metal – supported by pure Satanic lyrics – doesn’t sound too innovative. Furthermore I can’t neglect the fact that my collection already incorporates so many MORBID ANGEL and IMMOLATION outputs that they are more than sufficient to cover this style. But no argument on this dark planet can alter the fact that WEAPON recorded one of the best releases of 2010. The band is offering on their second release pure aggression supported by extreme musical skills but without any kind of retro touch. It’s more the compact and massive material which allows the comparison with the cult acts of this style. If you listen to “From The Devil’s Tomb” for the first time the album will definitely blow you away. But the band has incorporated enough counterpoints – minor oriental guitar parts or some dark chants – to give the listener with every additional run this necessary feeling of ‘falling in love’ with a release. This time there is no need for any kind of name dropping of single tracks, the album is a unity and need to seen as such. By all means an unexpected masterpiece but uninvited guests (with a more than promising) future are always welcome at Voices From The Darkside.
