WHARFLURCH is a Florida based Death / Black Metal band. This is a compilation release put out by Morbid Chapel Records who seem to be in the business of digging out absolutely cavernous releases and issuing them out for the European markets. The compilation reviewed is a CD pressing, limited to 500 copies. At its core WHARFLURCH is a muddy, atmospheric, spacey Death Metal which is really unlike the generic Florida sound that you know. We could easily mistake this for one of the bands from the nordics. The focus is completely on the atmosphere, the riffs are adequate and keep you engaged, together with the atmosphere and the vocals, the rhythm section adds in a fantastic base to the overall sound. This is a tribute to the old school sound with a sludgy twist thrown in. The opener ‘Kosmosa Kopums’ is a wonderful representation of the overall sound which is an absolutely guttural, deep, downtuned, primitive and a brutally raw approach to Death Metal. The production is absolutely on point here, everything has been tuned in perfectly with one another. ‘Sulphur Hell’ is a possible highlight on this album, this is fantastic songwriting, we have extremely engaging basic riffs that are mashed with an atmosphere from the deepest of dungeons. The soul of this compilation is firmly affixed in the old school Finnish Death Metal approach which is a delight. The atmosphere is like a symphony to a swamp monster! If you like the subterranean depths of distorted heaviness you need to check out WHARFLURCH and this compilation is a great place to start. The EP is a winner! Their demo from 2019 showcases a slightly different version of the band, the music has thrashy elements which surprised me, honestly I was expecting the band to be even slower and heavier. However this is clearly an excellent addition to this compilation and adds more weightage to the decision making. Simple, get a copy!
