WHARFLURCH
Psychedelic Realms Ov Hell
(Personal Records / Gurgling Gore)

The world has exploded, Australia is now a wasteland, there’s toxicity sprawling across every inch of the land. Human kind has shredded itself to pale shadows of themselves. The water is contaminated, roads are split across evenly as the molten lava flows in between. At a distance, on a melting rock, stands Mad Max and he clicks play on his Sony Walkman, held together by tape and bone. As he steps into his car, his headset blares WHARFLURCH’s “Psychedelic Realms Ov Hell”. Right from the get go, WHARFLURCH embraces the spite and channels it slowly, steadily as a rock crusher exhaling vitriol off its heart. I’ve been following this band almost from the inception and this avatar of the band is perhaps their best representation. Knuckle hard drumming, coupled with a low end to shatter your delicate French wine glasses, the band comes together as a unit to spew darkened atmosphere, wrapped in traditional Death Metal heaviness. The deep vocals just weave into the rhythm as this venomous slab of slimy, sludgy, dirty, suffocating ten ton monster falls on society. While some parts of the rhythm feel like a regular affair, the leads stand out on this record. They’re wicked and cast a spell almost always. The use of effects is perfect, almost like how you’d imagine reading comic books. Just like the end of track #2 ‘Stoned Ape Apocalypse’, which leads to an eerie ‘Abandoning Reality’ and you know the band put in a lot of thought to the overall structure of the album. Everything is placed perfectly, there’s no room for doubt or hesitation. Mixed to a Death Metaller’s delight, the album stands out amongst its peers this year. If you like your Death Metal devoid of guitar wankery and appreciate a straightforward, no-nonsense ferocious atmospheric attack then this album is for you. What’s even better is the band doesn’t lose a sense of melody during this madness, some of the pieces are just brilliant. Guys, know what? Just get this album, if you like Death Metal remotely, you need to check this release out. If you still have any doubts, just look at that cover art. It’s bloody glorious.
