Formed in 2015 and based in Philadelphia (USA), this power trio consisting of J.H. (bass, vocals), J.D. (guitars, vocals) and Mike Howard (drums) play a mix of Doom Metal and Sludge with some Death Metal influences. Only one word came to my head after the first spin of “Cemetery Hallucinations” , their second album: heavy. This is some absolutely crushing stuff. Actually, MOROS’ style dwells in the mid to slow pace. There are some D-beat and skank parts in their songs mixed in that keep things interesting and varied, but they never reach crazy fast rhythms. And I don’t think they need them. Their songs plainly annihilate the listener with simple yet effective riffs, aggressive vocals and a total oppressive atmosphere. This takes me to the production. It feels both modern and raw at the same time. The mix is really clever, leaving the music up front and putting the vocals a tad behind, which makes them feel like another percussive instrument instead. The guitar tone is massive. J.D.’s riffs combine tremolo picking, palm mutes and even some interesting minor harmonies. He also throws in some ambient leads that blend really good within the songs. J.H.’s deep, distorted bass tone builds upon that creating a humongous wall of sound. Mike’s drums are raw, organic yet focused with a discerning use of double kick and cymbals. And to top it off, the plain hostility of the vocals, using both desperate grunts and mid roars, fits in perfectly. The master is a tad bricked for my taste, but I think in cases like this one, it is necessary. I think “Cemetery Hallucinations” is an assault to the senses. Curiously, I didn’t notice when it was over and that shows its replay value. Some songs may feel a bit reiterative in certain parts. But that is easily overlooked, since I think the band shows cohesion, uniformity and identity all the way through. 100% recommended.
