Right from the starting note of this album, ABYTHIC provides a melancholic and an atmospheric twist to Death Metal that’s not quite your standard AUTOPSY or your IMMOLATION. This is INCANTATION wrapped in a winter drenched twin-spired cathedral. At first when I looked at the tracklist, I noticed the opener ‘At The Threshold Of Obscurity’ was about 15 minutes long and I was immediately worried, but ABYTHIC managed to write some phenomenal Death Metal in these modern times that it keeps you hooked! The vocals sound majestic, the guitars are holding the elements together, whilst the drumming is literally perfect. There is nothing you’d like to add to this sound you’re experiencing, it’s patient and heavy whilst slowly engulfing you in the atmosphere. Not that ABYTHIC’s created something brand new here, but they’ve surely managed to put out an excellently written and brilliantly mixed album that is immediately getting on to my list for the year end. Their entire approach to songwriting is to entwine story telling with darkness, mix heaviness with atmosphere and gently slide it across the table over to you. There are elements of GRAVE and BOLT THROWER but those elements are not really in-your-face. I suppose the closest we could get is ASPHYX, but ABYTHIC manages to stand on its own. As much as the outlook of the sound points to the direction of the greats, the brilliant songwriting and execution make it stand out. Highly recommended to all fans of Death Metal, this is a treat! I’ve got to watch this band live, either this side of the Atlantic or in some local German fest. Iron Bonehead has done a phenomenal job here!
