The hallmark of any German Metal band is simple, quality and APEP does the absolute same. APEP is an old school Death Metal band hailing from Saxony and “Before Whom Evil Trembles” is their second full length and their first with War Anthem Records. The band sounds primitive and is in a constant state of flux. Sticking to the established template of how a traditional Death Metal album should sound, APEP puts it all together as a tight woven archaic attack. The opener ‘Enslaving The Putrefied Remnants Of The Deceased’ is the perfect introduction to their capabilities and sound. The band is adept and technical with their instruments. The vocals sound in alignment with the rest of the band. “Before Whom Evil Trembles” as an album is very well produced with each instrument given its space. This can literally be experienced in every single section of every track on the album. The drumming sensibilities remind me of Dave Lombardo’s excellent sections in SLAYER. Some riffs are very Karl Sanders’esque, especially the opening of ‘The Pillars Of Betrayal’, something you’d hear in early NILE records and it’s incredibly done to mash it with the band’s approach to Death Metal. It’s safe to say fans of NILE should definitely check this record out, I’d stretch it out a little and perhaps include broader fans of Death Metal should definitely give this album their attention. APEP’s music will certainly scratch the specific itch of MORBID ANGEL, DEICIDE, IMMOLATION and NILE’s fans. At just under 38 minutes, APEP ensures they keep you interested whilst giving it their 100%. I’m on the fence about the cover art and I’m delighted to see the artist’s name on the cover art, something that you normally do not see. I wish more bands did this. Finally, I love their band logo! Really well done! For more information, please visit www.facebook.com/apepband or www.facebook.com/waranthemrecords
