Some days ago METALLICA released a new album and like always the drum sound is in the center of discussions. But I tell you, if you really want to listen to some tinny and hollow drums listen to BARZAKH. The duo from Indonesia uses a drum computer, but in no way this is an excuse for such a hollow and tympanitic sound. Honestly, I nearly felt off my chair. After giving this release (despite the short playing-time it is labeled as an album) a few spins I got used to the drum computer, so that I could have a closer listen to the other components of the music. Scratchy vocals, blurred guitars which are playing Black Metal riffs Scandinavian style (early nineties), somewhere even a bass guitar makes an appearance, but it is like finding the needle in a haystack. To make things even more obscure, according to Metal Archives "In A Meaning The Note" was originally released back in 2007. No discussion, if you need an illustration for a needless re-release this album is the most perfect example. I am not denying the band’s desire for playing Black Metal and if you are used to rehearsal room recordings the sound may not bother you. And there are some moments which BARZAKH may build on and improve. But to me the whole release seems more like demo than a worked out album.
