Long-standing Norwegian Death Metal stalwarts BLOOD RED THRONE are back with their latest album via Soulseller Records. What can be said to you all that you more than likely not know already? Formed in the late nineties from other notable bands of the era, they have since released a prominent catalogue. Members have come and gone since their inception, and if anything, they seem to have trouble holding a consistent vocalist. Five have passed through their ranks and thus it can be said to be the only real noteworthy change in sound. For the most part the sole remaining original members, Freddy Bolsø (drums) and Daniel “Død” Olaisen (guitars) have maintained a fairly consistent sound through the years. Again, no need to mention that sound, because we all have heard at least one album from the band. But for the uninitiated, just think CANNIBAL CORPSE, VOMITORY and maybe DYING FETUS. Mainly because of the various chugs and stomps happening on this particular release. If you listen closely as well, you can hear the jangly style bass playing being a touch more prominent in the mix. Crank up ‘Vermicular Heritage’ to get a perfect sound sampling of what I mention. Also, current vocalist Sindre Wathne Johnsen adds a variety of vocal techniques. From low guttural growls to some blackish screams, and some minor slam-like squeals are interspersed here and there. A warm and prominent production gives the guitars some heft, and also gives a slightly atypical tone from much of their regional brethren. So, there you go, nothing groundbreaking, but then again, not a bad release by any means, it follows the format of much of their earlier material. If anything, those DYING FETUS elements and also the more varied vocal approach are the main “differences” to my ears. It could be a good introduction for those new to the band.
