Before I go into the details of BLOOD VOMIT’s debut CD I have to tell you that they use a drum computer throughout the whole album. It does not sound too awful, but if you are an aesthetic (I am – when it comes to Metal drums played by a fucking machine) you will be disgusted by this fact. But fortunately this is the only problem “Up From The Grave” has, a clinical, unnatural drum sound. The song material, all created, produced and performed by one man, namely Keith Barnard, is quite strong, but in no way innovative or original. It reminds me of old BROKEN HOPE or IMPETIGO, very gory, mostly mid-paced Death Metal, including all trademarks of this genre: horror movie intros, zombies on the cover, simple riffs, deep growling vocals mixed with some NECROPHAGIA-like screams. Doesn’t sound very special, does it??? But nevertheless, I like “Up From The Grave”, because of its morbid old-school groove, that surfaces in songs like the title-track, my personal fave ‘Night Of The Unclean Spirits’ or the blasting ‘The Hunger’. In addition to that, there are some good and really memorable riffs on this album. Only ‘The Shredder’ is ruined by the fucking drum computer, although it features a quite unusual church organ in the background. What surprises me is that Barnard managed to create this special bloodthirsty and heavy feeling I always love when listening to Gore Death bands like AUTOPSY or old CANNIBAL CORPSE. Another thing I always honor is when a band does not claim itself to be the most extreme or fastest band around, but dares to do slow grinding groove parts too. BLOOD VOMIT respectfully pay their tribute to the roots of the Gore / Death genre but do not sound like a cheap copy or boring, outdated shit. I can honestly recommend this CD to Gore / Death fans, because it is simply entertaining bloody pus spewing forth from your speakers, which would be really great with a human drummer.
