Release a low-fi production EP after putting out an outstanding sounding debut album? CATACUMBA tried something different this time around, 3 years have passed after the release of their debut full length, a few line-up changes and moving to a different label helped the band to keep on going even when the time looked dark for them as a band. The horde known as CATACUMBA came back from the catacumba (catacomb) and released this EP via different labels in different countries to reach a wider spectrum of fans which is a great move from a good band. The melodic riffing and crushing distortion is still there, the vocals now play a bigger role and try different vocal styles from one song to another which sounds good at times but sometimes pulls off and distract the attention and focus of the song. What doesn’t help this time around is the production, which sounds thin and weak compared to what the displayed on their debut album, weird thing is I think it suits the new songs better, but on the other hand the song structures are a bit more complicated and you can’t hear some riffs as it gets muddy at times. Not a bad record, just average, I was impressed with the technique and composition but the production kicks me down. Give it a try and make your own assumption.
