Japan has always delivered when it comes to extreme music; be it Metal, Punk or Grindcore, I can come up with a long list of band names that excel in what they have done for the past 3 decades. And CODE RED here is no exception. "Fang Of The Sun" is their second album, released by the dedicated Chinese label Thrashing Cult Records. A very suiting label name, I may say. I am assuming that CODE RED took their name from SODOM’s album, but I may be wrong. Although their musical style is not far away from the aforementioned band. Both Yuichi and Izuru (who also handles vocals) deliver a varied collection of great riffs and tasty leads, with Aski providing some solid bass lines. Add the great drum work from Tomohira and you got the perfect recipe for a full on and heavy as hell Thrash Metal attack! "Fang Of The Sun" sounds like it was recorded in the mid 90s. The production is great! The guitar tone is thick, yet articulated and crisp. I personally love the lead tone, which reminded me of mid 90s KREATOR and some hints off EXODUS’ "Tempo Of The Damned". The rhythm section is really tight and heavy, you can actually listen to all the bass work. The drums are powerful, yet pushed back a little in the mix, which offers an all around dense atmosphere. I really liked the fact that most of the songs have the Punk / Hardcore "fuck you" attitude. I can’t really describe this, but those of you who know what I am taking about will understand. They also add some melody here and there. On the other hand, after the first half of the album, some parts and rhthym patterns tend to sound the same. Also the vocals could use some variation, but these details are not detrimental to a great listening experience. Finally, all those Thrash Metal purists out there need not to worry about CODE RED being another retro Thrash clone.
