Well, since I don’t really know what to think of the latest release, Finnish cult act CONVULSE finally unleashed upon mankind, I have a feeling this is gonna become the shortest and most boring review I’ve done so far. Despite the opinion of many lunatics out there, considering "Resuscitation Of Evilness" and "World Without God" as the only true releases the band ever did, their second full-length "Reflections" has been my first contact with the band back in the days and will always be a special one for me, bringing back many great memories, each time I give it a spin. And even though the musical gap between the debut and its follow-up could not have been any larger, it still was CONVULSE; at least in one way or the other. But I just don’t get what main mind Rami Jämsä tried to create and express on "Cycle Of Revenge". Except for the harsh / gruffy vocals, there is nothing left of the Death Metal roots at all. With some psychedelic sounding guitars here and clean vocals there, this is neither fish nor fowl. Cross my heart, bands like UNLEASHED or maybe GRAVE do not sound anymore, like they used to back in their heydays, but after a few seconds you even recognize them both on each new record. I never expected a "World Without God" 2.0 and so shouldn’t anyone else, but if I would not have known that "Cycle Of Revenge" is the actual output of CONVULSE, I would have thought of a totally different band. If you ask me, Rami and his sidekicks would have acted more wisely while releasing this one under a different moniker. Open minded readers may dare to take a listen (and if you’re willing to give a band a chance that changes its style all the time you are rewarded with a pretty unique sounding record, that musically is totally rooted in the 70s, but still with the usual death grunts… in a way this is a pretty similar approach that early AMORPHIS had when they started to experiment, just without the keyboards – Frank); every other hardliner already stopped listening to their stuff after 1991. It’s just like ordering a double whopper, but getting a fuckin’ vegan tofu burger; a totally different taste and disappointing in most cases (I totally disagree here, and I suppose Hacker as well – Frank).
