CROSS ROARR is an entity that was formed during 2014 in Manizales, Colombia. CROSS ROARR cannot be pigeonholed into a single subgenre, because their sound is a mix of Heavy, Doom, Speed, Thrash and Black Metal. To this day, this Colombian trio has released one demo, two full-lengths, three splits and one compilation. This review will focus on CROSS ROARR’s first LP from 2019, “Philosophy Of Death”, which was reissued via Iron, Blood And Death Corporation. As a Latin American, I could identify myself with CROSS ROARR’s concept and lyrics that built up that LP. This creation is made out of 11 tracks, that can be listened to while having some beers with unknowned bums. The whole album is quite short, the riffs are not outlandish, but they are dirty and direct, meanwhile the drums keep on going with different kinds of tempos. The production is organic, made by Santiago Álvarez (the guitar and keyboard player), showing the sound how it should be listened. ‘Inner God’ is a perfect example of the musical diversity in CROSS ROARR. Harsh vomits, with compasses and drum finials span the subgenres indicated at the beginning of this review. ‘Murders In Disguise’ is not a euphonious composition, it’s a complaint for the dehumanization that corrodes contemporaneity, an interview where it is narrated how a social activist can be killed for going against the interests of the goverment, drug cartels’ business or simply being an antagonist towards the ideals of some idiots. Only death is real! The “Philosophy Of Death” continuity is quite enjoyable, the interludes that surround it, will let you with the necessity of having more and trying to understand this Colombian production. ‘Sabbatical Blues’ has a small presence of keyboards with a ’70s vibe. The only bad thing is that the song is quite short, 2:06 minutes are not enough. ‘Sinister Path’ is the piece that did not appear on the first edition of “Philosophy Of Death”, and for me it’s the greatest song on the whole album. The acoustic guitar, the mellotron and the vocals made me think of DOOMENTOR. CROSS ROARR is not for purists or elitists, it’s Metal in a different existence. So, if you are into CHILDREN OF TECHNOLOGY, BARBARIAN, BONEHAMMER or BLUDWULF, you should revise CROSS ROARR. More information you will find at www.facebook.com/crossroarr, www.facebook.com/ibdc666
