I don’t know if the majority of you readers are familiar with the DOOM PATROL comic books and especially the 1989-1992 period written by Grant Morrisson who introduced avant-garde literature into the pubescent comic universe to better subvert it, and so transforming a run of the mill dull super hero concept into a surrealistic nightmare. Well, you could say that DECEMBER WOLVES do just that musically with their sophomore full length, and the cover art somewhat triggered in me the connection with the aforementioned comics, and give me a key to enter the DECEMBER WOLVES disturbing world. Don’t get fooled by the band monicker, more reminiscent of frozen Norwegian landscapes than of the urban jungle we live in, because DECEMBER WOLVES are more, much more, than another Black Metal band, even if some elements of the genre are kept in the music, especially in the vocal department. "Blasterpiece Theatre" is an enigmatic release, the musical transposition of a bad trip, an avant-garde monument. The extreme violence and brutality of this release rhyme with intelligence, and I regret I don’t have the full lyrics sheet, even if the band biography (more a manifesto than the usual band history) gives me hints of what DECEMBER WOLVES are about now. Keep in mind the most shocking images and dialogues of such works of art that are ERASERHEAD and FIGHT CLUB while listening to "Blasterpiece Theatre" because this album could be a perfect score for this kind of film. Don’t expect boring experimental music of the ambient kind but instead a devastating Metal to the core album enriched by very modern vibes. This mutated Black Metal is lacerated by electronic sonic blasts, sampled demented voices, drowning the listener into a bleak nightmare. All the songs flow at furious pace to the point of listening to this album in its entirety will left you exhausted but still begging for more. Even the use of a drum machine (more than often an annoyance for any self respecting Metal fan) logically fits the whole concept. DECEMBER WOLVES are a Metal commando unleashed against mediocrity, and "Blasterpiece Theatre" is certainly the most bizarre yet at the same time the most captivating album I have heard recently. To me DECEMBER WOLVES are here to stay, and that is for the better I must say.
