Ukrainian sextet DEF/LIGHT has a pretty interesting yet unique approach in their Black Metal. This stuff ain’t something one could call your ordinary Black Metal for the masses. In fact, DEF/LIGHT perform the kind of Black Metal that is pretty far from your standard sounding Norse-tinged Black Metal. "Hateforhateone", this 8-track offering which is supposed to be DEF/LIGHT’s debut full-length studio album – originally self-released by the band members themselves and later Russian MSR Productions (according to some sources available in the internet), is a pretty original mixture of Black, Thrash, Death and even Symphonic Metal, in which also this Ukrainian extreme Metal act does quite a lot of different type of experimentation – just pushing the envelope the kind of way that sets them apart from a big masses of faceless and unoriginal Black Metal acts, without any identity of their very own. For the most part, they sound more than "alright" – truly trying to obtain something a bit different musically for themselves, and even succeeding pretty well at those certain attempts to sound different and unique. Then again, as for some shortcomings they have on this record, some parts don’t sound that well thought out at all and end up sounding pretty clumsy here and there, like they would have rushed into the studio just a bit too early to record some of the material for this opus. Production-wise, the drums sound kinda hollow at times but that doesn’t have that negative effect on the music itself as one may think of at first. But that’s about it. There’s lots of different feelings, moods and melodies loaded into this record too, providing a varied yet somehwat harmonious journey for all the listeners to enjoy the album. All in all, more positive than negative things can be directed toward DEF/LIGHT’s "Hateforhateone" – and a cover of MY DYING PRIDE’s ‘Sear Mer X666’ ain’t bad.
