Do we have enough gore-grinding brutal Death Metal bands in the world, or do we need yet a band to be obscene and profane? My initial answer to this would be no, though after having spent some hours with Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s finest DELIGHT TO DIVIDE, I have changed my mind a tad, it is okay to squeeze yet a band in that category, into our world of blood and gore! Is the music something we have heard before? Oh yes, indeed it is. This is classic brutal Death Metal all the way through, classical riff progressions, pounding drum patterns, great hooking rhythm patterns, a guttural growl that follows the rhythm guitar, classical and punishing, with a youthful energy and intensity. A few times the band tries to go a more technical Death Metal direction, than the base they deliver. It doesn’t work that well in my book, it becomes a bit too clumsy, in the midst of the brutal feast. It is so damn brutal and aggressive, a senseless beating from the first riff to the last, there are so many pungent blasts, fierce riffs and an overall intensity and aggression that keeps your ears glued to the speakers. If you think you’ve met an aggressor, I’ll guarantee you, you haven’t, until you’ve had an encounter with DELIGHT TO DIVIDE. The production is solid and presents the music well, though a tad more warmth and depth would do the music good, it becomes a bit too clean and polished, a bit more grime and rawness would have suited the output, together with some more bottom on the guitars. I don’t listen much to music in this category these days. There are of course the old classics that get a spin every second year and then I give the “newcomers” SEVERE TORTURE a good deal of spins, something I suspect the Germans to have done as well, as I have made myself to believe I can find an inspiration or two on “Passion Of Killing” and perhaps a few other places surrounding the release. “Passion Of Killing” is rock bottom solid and worth some spins, and I think it’ll stand the test of time – and for a debut album it is quite crushing and a sign of a bright and brutal future for this trio, if they can keep it brutal and straight forward.
