Finland’s Death Metal machine DESECRESY returned last year with their follow-up to their highly regarded 2015 album “Stoic Death”. I have been meaning to check out this new album since my buddy told me last year when he heard it and was really impressed. To be honest this is the first time I actually hear this DESECRESY album in its entirety as before I had only heard a couple of songs, but liked what I heard. Now for those of you who know Xtreem Music know what you are in for when they release an album. The label specializes in underground gems in Death Metal. This time around Tommi Grönqvist is the only remaining member of the band handling all instruments plus vocals as former vocalist Jarno Nurmi left the band in 2016. So let’s kick off this review off for “The Mortal Horizon”. The album consists of 9 tracks with a run time of 33:29 minutes chalk full of brutality. Just a quick reminder the band is formed from the ashes of SLUGATHOR (if you have not heard them, go check them out ASAP, you will not be disappointed). The music is catchy and full of some good riffs à la INCANTATION sounding at times. ‘Horizon Blazing’ is an excellent representation of what DESECRESY brings to the table and the vocals are just devastatingly brutal (Tommi’s first recording doing vocals for the band). I found myself hitting repeat on the song ‘Percussive Necromancy’ and with good reason. Catchy guitars, a melodic mesmerizing guitar solo towards the end of the track, and it invokes a sound from the early 90s era Death Metal. Wait a second, I have to listen to the song one more time as this review is being written. ‘Concealed Depths’, ‘Perpetual Waves’ and ‘Approaching Infinity’ are three tracks that also really stood out on this release. This overall is a really good album and is worth a listen. Will it redefine Death Metal? Not really, but the band does help carry the torch for the genre and have done so since their inception. The production was good, but I wish they had given the drums a bit more attention as they sounded under appreciated.
