Thuringias Death Metal force DESERTED FEAR return with their second output called "Kingdom Of Worms". I must admit, that I missed out their first full length "My Empire", so I checked out this one first, before I started to review their new album. What has changed within the last two years? The dirty rotten stench of the first album has been put aside and makes place for some more melodic guitar work and melodies, which has been already indicated in a bunch of songs of their first album. Namedropping is always something, which helps to describe the music of a band, but also sometimes limits their own abilities to be a pure copy. This band is not simply copying the old Death Metal style of the 90s. They live and breathe this style in every single minute of their songs, as non of the tracks sound or seem to be constructed in any way, to write a good Death Metal track. Anyway a band, which I really adore and an album of them, that has accompanied me for the last twenty years, comes into my mind more than once, and this is meant as a bow to DESERTED FEAR’s music. DESULTORY and their magic second album "Bitterness" was a very special album for me, not only in my youth and "Kingdom Of Worms" is the first album since then, that manages to capture the magic of Death Metal combined with the warmth and beauty of slight melodies of Gothic Metal, before this style turned into this ridiculous weepy direction, we mostly have now. Especially the track ‘The Agony’ spreads a very special magic and this killer lead melody, the harsh vocals and the fast drumming could easily have fitted onto "Bitterness". The remaining tracks are on a similar quality level, so this output for me is already in my top ten of this years releases. Of course for some people their renunciation from pure old school Death Metal to a more melodic direction might be a bit disappointing, but I am sure that they will convince a lot of other people with the new album anyway.
