Finland’s underground has always been a breeding ground for raw talent, but the arrival of Helsinki’s DGS brings a particularly vicious force to the surface. Though “Delusional Grasp Of Sanity” marks their debut full-length, the trio comprises seasoned veterans from collective outfits like NEUROSURGERY, ABSTRAKT, PUTRID DEFECATION, ELEGEION, FRAGILE HOLLOW, STRANGLE CHAIN, RAPTURE and DIABLERIE. And with this line-up of Iain Huntley on bass, vocals (backing), Alpo Laitinen on drums, vocals and Juho Häyrinen on guitars forged 12 tracks of uncompromised hostility. It’s lengthening below 30 minutes, where dusty old school Death Metal collides head on with devastating Grindcore ferocity. The brief opening blast of ‘Swarm’ wastes no time setting a direct and oppressive tone, exploding into abrasive riffs and an avalanche of frantic blast beats from the drummer Alpo Laitinen. Guitarist Juho Häyrinen chops out some razor-sharp riffing that pairs seamlessly with the dual vocal attack of Laitinen and bassist Iain Huntley. This dual vocal attack cover everything from deep, guttural croaks to wild and venomous like shrieks, added an impressive dynamism to the darkness that ran thorough the record. Further tracks as progressed with ‘Obliterate’, ‘Intoxication’, ‘Crawl’, ‘Antepartum’, ‘Indoctriated’, ‘Meaningless Existence’ and the lead single ‘Weakness’, comes in and get out like rapids. Among these, ‘Meaningless Existence’ and ‘Weakness’ solidly illustrate their uncompromising approach with stripping away any polished modern pretense in favor of pure, instinctual impact. What highly impressive is that DGS showed their ability to diversify the carnage without losing their core dynamism. As one might expect a straightforward ROTTEN SOUND or NASUM clone, but it’s not. As the band leans heavily into assumed Hardcore breaks and somber, mid-tempo stomps on numbers like ‘Crawl’ and the insane closer ‘Doom’. The production serves this hybrid incredibly well, which overall sounds raw, organic and dirty like a city sewer, yet clear enough to let every drum punch and bass line find its presence in the dark. It values atmosphere over excessive technicality, nodding respectfully to Finnish pioneers. Having said so, this debut “Delusional Grasp Of Sanity” doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it delivers doses of auditory assault that bounds to put smirks to those Death and Grind heads, who follows BRUTAL TRUTH, VOMITOY, ROTTEN SOUND, LOCK UP, ABHORRENCE and NAPLAM DEATH. It’s surely a solid effort that poised to mark DGS as an underground threat to watch closely. Give this a loud blast and prepare to have your old wounds fester all over again.
